Hello from NY! Spending the next few days at the ShopRite Fall Getaway so my scenery is much different from the pics in this post! I’ve been meaning to get this post out as I had several questions and requests about Summer’s 8th birthday party last month. It might be fall now but bookmark this post for how to throw a simple Hawaiian luau for kids in the future!

If you’ve been following me awhile then you have seen some of the past parties we’ve done for Summer. Every year we have a backyard party and Summer always chooses her theme about 6 weeks prior. Her Super Hero party is here, her mermaid party is here and her horse birthday theme party is here. This year she wanted a luau which was fitting as it was pretty easy to execute and with Covid we wanted to keep the guest list small and the theme pretty simple. With the help of my Mom and Sister I think we pulled it off!
I usually rent table and chairs for the kids but I felt with a Hawaiian luau it would be cute for the kids to eat more picnic style. We were able to find some wood palettes and spray paint them white to lay in the lawn as tables. Kinda genius if you ask me as I can store them and use them for future parties. You can keep centerpieces simple with just buying whole pineapples and taking some old children’s sunglasses to put on them.
I had bought the “Summer” and “boho” beach blankets seen here and here, but I did miscalculate as I probably needed a few more so I just added some large beach towels for the kid to sit on. My mom took old large pillows, bought some inexpensive fabric and covered them up to match the bright colors of the Hawaiian luau.
Of course we had to have leis, tropical headpieces and hula skirts for the girls to wear this year. We hung them all on a clothing rack and as each guest came they got to pick one out.
And as usual we had the treat table for the favors. My sister and mom ordered 2 huge boxes of leis and created the backdrop.
From donuts to candy everything had a Hawaiian touch!
Donuts are all the rage right now so I ordered a dozen from the local donut shop and got these pineapple toppers to make them perfect for a Hawaiian luau.
And always a hit are rice krispie treats and I think every year we have done a different spin on them. A little food dye and some chocolate chips to make them look like watermelons.
Last fun detail from the treat table are the candy kabobs. I did a mix of marshmallows, mango sour belts, and watermelon rings. We also had pin the pineapple on the palm tree that my sister made. Of course I totally forgot to get a picture of it! After 1 round those kiddos figured out how to win anyway haha!
And that’s it for our simple Hawaiian luau for kids. Small, simple, intimate but just what Summer wanted! Cannot believe our sassy girl is 8 and starting 2nd grade this week! So much love for our darling daughter. You are strong and mighty! I know you will power through every adventure, every challenge and every accomplishment that lies ahead of you. Keep dancing. Keep shining. Today and always.
